SONNET OF THE EVERYDAY
from Suburban Pastoral
Cacophony of bird songs,
canopy of blue sky and white tufts of clouds,
a vague melody of sunlight
cracks through the trees,
a leafy song of morning in her head,
harmonic ballad strumming on the
guitar strings of her sleepy mind,
fingers working the moist soil,
crushing clumps and turning,
churning the damp odorous peat:
Dig in with the spade, drag the rake,
a new bed for this year’s tulips,
a new song, early planting
on this early spring morning.
